Rizzo Channeling Bowden?
SI dot com's Jon Heyman reports in his latest column that Mike Rizzo might be asking for the sun, moon, and stars, a la Jimbo, in recent trade talks with opposing GMs:
One issue other teams have expressed is that the Nationals are said to be seeking to hit a grand slam with trades. "They want a dollar and a quarter for a dollar," one competing GM complained.
Wah, wah, wah. But really, doesn't the exchange rate seem to be an improvement over Jimbo, who endeared himself around the league by asking for more like two dollars, two dimes, and a nickel for every dollar?
And Silent Stan backed up his interim GM, suggesting to Heyman that Rizzo is the anti-Jimbo:
Stan Kasten said by phone that all the proposals and counterproposals run through him, and he hasn't noticed anything that would lead him to believe Rizzo's suggestions are generally unrealistic or out of the ordinary.
So, we'll start being concerned if and only if Rizzo starts riding around Nationals Park on a Segway.
Unfortunately, we won't be able to attend tomorrow's Nationals' Blogger Day at Nationals Park (a surprising, very cool gesture by the team). But if we could be there, we'd ask Stan when he's going to finally remove that interim tag from Rizzo's name. And since we're not convinced that Ken Rosenthal was wrong about the Fired Manny Acta rumor; just that there's a possibility the team had to back off out of fear of taking yet another PR hit because of the leaked information, AND we're not convinced that taking 2/3 against the Yankees guarantees Manny any semblance of job security, we'd ask Stan to comment. Hopefully our fellow bloggers will take up the cause.
