(Collin Balester to the rescue! Wait. Where's his mustache? Picture of TV/MASN by Nationals Enquirer staff.)
Collin Balester emerged from the bullpen Thursday night without his mustache.
After beaning the Brewers' Rickie Weeks and D-backs' Mark Reynolds with fastballs to the head in a span of roughly 9 days, it appears that Balester needed to change things up a bit. He shaved his mustache. It worked: on Thursday, his first appearance since drilling Reynolds, Balester struck out five and didn't hit anybody in two innings of work.
Now, it could be argued that Balester's mustache ranked second to Stephen Strasburg for top development out of Nationals camp in Viera during spring training. Here's a picture from the halcyon days of Balester's mustache, lifted from DC Sports Bog (who got the pic from CSN Washington's Kelli Johnson), under the headline "Collin Balester's mustache is incredible.":
Indeed it was.

All that just for the "mustache ride" title?
So worth it.

The American Mustache Institute finds this statistical anomaly both disheartening and disgusting. Never forget what the Dead Sea Scrolls state, "Each time a mustache is shaved, an angel in heaven dies and falls to earth.
Carry on.
